Kiewiet January 2017

Dear Members and friends of St Francis Bay Golf Club,

We are firmly into a new year and we are all looking forward to improving on our golf and the things that happen in and around our lives in general.

May we wish every reader and their families a wonderfully healthy, happy and prosperous 2017. We look forward to see all of you enjoying our Club and spending happy times here.

From the Chairman

Dear Members & friends,

Our well attended AGM completed a successful year at St Francis Golf Club.

We welcome the newly elected committee members and say thank you to those retiring members who have contributed to our past successes.

The hard work starts all over again with the management and the new team.

Derek de Villiers – Chairman

From the Captain

Dear Golfers and Members,

On behalf of the new committee I would like to thank Willie, the past Captain for all his endeavours. I doubt many members are aware of the tireless work Willie has put in behind the scenes. I can assure you that your efforts are highly appreciated and we wish you everything of the best in your “semi-retirement”.

To Derek our Chairman, thank you for agreeing to stand again, albeit with a tinge of reluctance. You took over the helm with the Club in choppy waters and steered us to a great place. Considering the state of golf both country and indeed worldwide, the position of our Club can be considered admirable by any standards. With a new committee in place, it is particularly reassuring to have you at the helm again.

Over the Festive Season I have heard such wonderful comments from visitors far and wide concerning the atmosphere in our Club. For this in the main we need to thank our staff who have at times gone way beyond the call of duty. Thank you so very much for your tireless efforts, they are appreciated by people not only in this country.

To our fellow members, we pledge to serve in the best interests of the Club and golf in general by sustaining the momentum in place. A great Club is a happy Club and I can assure you that the lines of communication will always be open to suggestions for improvement. As stated in an earlier Kiewiet, a written proposal is the preferred medium.

So as to move onward and upward we could do worse than remember those immortal lines (paraphrased): Ask not what your club can do for you, ask what you can do for your club!

Have a great golfing year.

Richard Vauqulin – Club Captain

CLUB ACTIVITIES – December/January

December and January were filled with a number of great events:

Captains’ Day – For the second year we started our Captains’ Day weekend with “The Heritage” on the Friday. We play the original 9-hole layout in a totally fun competition where we invite everyone that would like to, to come and join us. Thanks to Barry Tonkin for all the arrangements as well as getting the many sponsors. Thanks also to the sponsors who made this day possible. A great day was had by all. Best dressed golfer: Ken McGregor and the winning 4-Ball below.

On Saturday members enjoyed playing a free round of golf with the competition a 4-Ball Alliance – Each player wearing a different colour cap and scoring done according to the cap colours on each hole. Leo Davis scored a Hole in One and received a Magnum of choice wine from Beyerskloof Wines and a Club Voucher. Our winners were congratulated by Jo Viviers, Managing Partner from Moore Stephens, our sponsors for the day. After Prize-giving players and their partners sat down to a great meal and then enjoyed a very entertaining and interesting talk by former EP and Protea cricketer, Dave Callaghan, who was accompanied by his wife Sharon. Our sincere thanks to Moore Stephens for their support and for everyone that made the day such an enjoyable one – Our Management and staff in the Club; The Ground Staff who gave us a tremendous course to play on; Jani, Frank and the catering staff and last but not least Dave and Sharon that graced us with their presence for the day.

The Maxwell Trophy – On Wednesday 21st December a wonderful field competed for this, the oldest trophy in the Club. As with the rest of December, the weather was great and the players enjoyed the day as well as the wonderful prizes presented to the winners. Congratulations to Ken Wiggins who  showed all of us that age was no handicap and walked away with the winning prize as well as the Maxwell Trophy. That was however not all. He also had a Hole in One on the 10th hole for which he received the Magnum of Beyerskloof wine and a Club Voucher and he scored his age or better for the 91st time. A real example for all of us to follow.

We also hosted the first of three qualifying events for the Windhoek Lager International Pairs competition and the winners will go on to the Regional Finals and hopefully to the Finals. The other two games will be played in the first three months of the year. Please watch out for the dates and bring your best golf along to hopefully represent your Club.

The Annual – The tenth edition of this friendship competition between the members of the Links and our Club took place on the 2nd/3rd January in weather that was totally playable on both days. This competition is sponsored by Richard Arderne of Pam Golding Properties – St Francis and we are really thankful for the continued support over the years. It might have been because Jeff Clause was taken ill and had to make a trip to hospital, but after trying hard for a number of years and coming second every time, our Club succeeded in winning the Annual Trophy by a mere 0.16 points. The photo shows that it wasn’t easy to get the trophy away from The St Francis Links’ Tinus Keller. The overall winners were Fred Van Eyssen and Julien Wertz from the Links. Thanks to all the competitors and we certainly look forward to next year!!!

The St Francis Open – This competition took place on Saturday 7th January with Maritime Motors as our Title Sponsor. Our sincere thanks to Wikus Loots, Steve and the Maritime Team.

Congratulations to our winners of the day:
Ladies: Caroline Kettlewell (1st) & Nicole Kellett (2nd)
Men: Mike Smith (1st), Gavin Felix (2nd) and Darryl Hendricks (3rd)

The Kettlewell Trophy is the last big event on the yearly calendar, where our local and country ladies, as well as visitors, participate for the trophy, which John Kettlewell instituted in 1983.

The ladies teed off this year in beautiful weather on 19th December and ended the day all smiles, followed by a tasty Christmas lunch prepared by Jani and Frank Ellis.  We were  honoured with the presence of our founder members,  June Henson, Lindi Pagden and Joy McWilliams, who joined us for lunch.

The winners on the day featuring on the group photo are:

First & trophy winner: Dale Ball
Fifth: Jean Fynn
Third: Heather Kruger
Fourth: Caroline Kettlewell
Second: Clare Millson

The year started with one of the Club’s great traditions, namely the Maritime Motors St. Francis Open. Although this event is traditionally seen as the Men’s Open, the ladies also participate for separate prizes. This year Caroline Kettlewell came first and Nicole Kellett second. Congratulations ladies!!
