Kiewiet March/April

Dear Members and friends of St Francis Bay Golf Club,

While the dry season has extended itself into another month, we are having some great golf played here at our Club. Our greens are responding well to Gordon’s treatment – the over-seeding and fertilisation program together with regular watering. Although our fairways generally are still showing the effects of the drought, the watering of special areas has also seen some success with the grass showing some resilience and also showing some green colouring. Our thanks to Gordon and his Grounds Team for giving us a very playable golf course.

April sees many of the Public holidays and we are looking forward to seeing many of our up-country visitors coming to enjoy golf in St Francis Bay. Please also make sure that you book for the big competitions so that you are sure you have a good tee-off time.

In April we also have our Club Championships (Stroke Play) in the new time-slot, something members have been asking for over some years. Please support the Club Championships over the weekend of 22nd/23rd April. Even when you feel that your golf isn’t quite up to standard, it is a competition that members should treasure and participate in to ensure that our Club Champions – Men and Ladies – have been thoroughly tested. Looking forward to seeing you participating in this prestige event.

Please read through the rest of this Newsletter to see what is happening and which events are coming up during April and early May. If you have any contribution to make to the Newsletter, please send it to Janine at the Club and we will see how it can be used.

Support your Club and enjoy the golf,

From the Captain

We are all at times guilty of taking things for granted, including the condition of our golf course. Recently an EPGU event was, at short notice, switched to our club from Royal Port Alfred due to the poor condition of the latter. Save for two greens, the competitors were unanimous in their praise of our course – A vote of confidence if ever there was one. Another prominent club in Port Elizabeth has now extended preferred lies to 3 club lengths. Considering the financial plight of some clubs in the Eastern Cape, we ought to count ourselves as fortunate that our Club is in a financially sound situation. Enjoy your course and bring friends along when possible.

I am pleased to advise that entries for the revived club knock-outs were well supported and before the final putt of the US Masters is holed, the draws will be on the notice board. The list for the club championships, our premier event, will be taken down shortly. As such please put your names down if you have not already done so. The attendance and whisky draws are gaining momentum, thank you for your support and please continue to do so.

Happy days and happy rounds, on and off the course!
Richard Vauqulin – Club Captain

EP Country Districts

We were fortunate to be awarded this tournament which was supposed to have been played at Royal Port Alfred. A good field turned out and the players were very complimentary about our course in general and they also again enjoyed the hospitality extended to them and the friendly atmosphere of the Club. Thanks to everyone that pulled together to make this possible.

Windhoek Lager  Pairs

The last of three tournaments to qualify for a place in the Regional Finals took place on 11 March and we were again very fortunate to have a good field of players that allowed us to enter two pairs in the Regional Final.

We wish all the Pairs from our Club everything of the best for the qualifying game.

Sunbirdies Competition

Over the last few years our two Clubs have been very fortunate to have been visited by large numbers of golfers from the Scandanavian countries who were brought here as a result of the successful marketing work done by Anita Lennox and her team of the Cape St Francis Resort as well as Tourism. It was again wonderful to see how they enjoy our course and how some of them and especially Virpi Haataja (see in the photo back in Finland doing some skiing), integrated with our members and played many competitions here as well.

On Friday 24th March they had a small competition at our Club just before they were to return to their home countries. We would like to wish them a good summer and look forward to welcoming them back here in St Francis next year. The photo shows a part of the group with the winners, Britt and Gosta who score a great 40 points.

ENGEN Sponsored Competition

Saturday 18th March saw Hugo from Engen making good on his promise to be back again this year. This has become one of our very enjoyable annual competitions and we would like to thank Hugo and Engen for their wonderful support of our Club.

Well done to Rowan Nicholls who has made it back into the winning circle with a great round of golf. That smaile says it all!!!

Ivan Kamte selected – We are proud to announce that Ivan Kamte has been selected to the EP Country Districts Team which will participate in the Country Districts Inter Provincial Golf Tournament to be held at San Lameer Golf Estate in May.

This has been a long time coming and we are sure that Ivan will do well and that the EP Team will bring home the bacon from KZN in May.

Wednesday 5th April was a very special day for the Club and our own golfing legend, Ken Wiggins. Ken turns 86 this year and on Wednesday he celebrated the 100th time that he had shot his age or better. This must be something of a record and really something to make a noise about.

Just to show that it was not luck, he scored another 85 on Saturday so he is now on his way to complete the second hundred times. Well done Ken. You are truly an example to many of us.

Ian Strang, our Mr. Moneybags, has made a visit to the hospital for some surgery. He is already home after he has had a knee replacement and we wish him well for the period of recovery.

Looking at the cartoon, we are happy that Ian at least had an option and that he didn’t have to go the way of Thunder.

Kouga League

Our Team continues to play bridesmaid, having come second every time this year. So far they have played in Joubertina, Zwartenbosch and Fynbos (Eerste Rivier). Their consistency is however being rewarded in that they are leaders on the log ahead of Hankey with three more games to play – one of which is at home. Well done to our very committed team. Wishing you well for the rest of the year.

Scratch League

At the time of going to press there wasn’t any news available but we will definitely have the League Wrap-up for you in the next edition of the Kiewiet. In the meanwhile we thank all the players who represent our Club and wish you well for the last game on 21st May.

Club Championships

This will be the first year that we have the Championships for the Men and Ladies on the same weekend earlier in the year. Please support the event and make this a wonderful weekend when we crown the Club Champion for Men & Ladies.

The draw will be according to handicap/division and for the second day a seeded draw.

Some members have indicated that, due to them sharing carts, they would like to play together. Please indicate this to the Club and Captain before the draw is made.

We look forward to a great weekend of championship golf!!

MAKRO/Rotary Golf Day

For the past few years this competition was a two-day affair co-hosted by ourselves and the Links. It has now been decided to revert to a one-day competition alternating between our course and the Links.

On Saturday 29th April this competition in aid of the St Francis Rotary Club Projects, will be hosted at our Club. Please support this important event which supports so many projects and initiatives in our area.

March has been good to the Ladies golf with regard to good weather on a Tuesday and these days have been well supported by our members and swallows.

Sadly, the swallows are returning north and we look forward to them arriving again by the end of the year.

The Pop Inn Beauty Bar golf morning on 28th March at St. Francis Bay Golf Club (SFBGC) was a GREAT success, thanks to Renee Botha and her Team. This is the third year in a row that Renee is the sponsor of this special beauty day.

Players from Jeffreys Bay, Port Elizabeth, the Links and even two visitors from Cape Town joined the SFBGC ladies to enjoy sunny weather and great golf. Forty ladies played in excellent conditions and the scores reflected that.

After the sponsored Better Ball competition, the ladies were pampered with free shoulder & neck and feet massages by the therapists. All the ladies received a small goody bag. The winners and nearest the pins received vouchers and products.

1st: Dawn Speirs and Nicole Kellett – 47 points
2nd: June Mason and Karen Hallam – 44 points
3rd: Heilie Uys and Jane Rigby-Fielder – 44 points
4th: Helen Bridges and Madeleine Barry – 44 points
Nearest to the pin on 8th hole: Judith Jubb
Nearest to the pin on 10th hole: Madeleine Barry

Our Knockout competition has started and the first round has been played. Please check the next round and arrange the games.

The League started on Monday the 3rd of April at Humewood Golf Club. Our ladies team consisted of Janine vd Merwe, Renee Botha, Heilie Uys, Caroline Kettlewell, Dawn Speirs and Clare Millson. They played against Royal Port Alfred and the LZH (Links, Zwartenbosch, Hankey) and won 17 out of 24 points! The best start ever.

It seems as if our ladies want to repeat our “league winner” status of 2008. We wish the team the best of luck.

The first Whisky draw was on Friday 31st of March after the Sundowner. The Whiskey raffle will continue throughout the year so please support this fundraising effort.

Our MIXED OPEN will be on EASTER MONDAY 17TH APRIL. Enter on the booking sheet at the club. Should you need a partner, we will find one of the great guys in the club. As for so many years in the past, Heather Rabie Properties will be the main sponsor again and we thank Heather for her continued support for this day. REMEMBER: There will also be a prize for the best dressed pair!

Our Strokeplay Championships are scheduled for 22nd & 23rd April. Ladies will compete in three divisions:

  • A: Handicaps 0-18
  • B: Handicaps 19-28
  • C: Handicaps 29-36 (play stableford)

Please ensure that you enter for this important event on our calendar.

Our weather has been kind to us but the drought is difficult for the course. We thank Gordon and his team as well as the Grounds Committee for their knowledge and commitment in keeping our course in good condition in these trying times.

Wishing you a good golfing month.
