Dear Fellow Golfer,
Where has the year gone? The holiday season has already started with some of our swallows having returned and some people who aren’t tied to school-holidays making use of the period prior to the rush in December and January.
We have published the full calendar of events for the Season so please make sure that you book for the competitions and also make sure that you book for your social games during the holidays as it gets pretty hectic through some of the days and you may find that you have to wait for some time before being able to tee-off.
The Club’s Annual General Meeting will take place on Thursday 12th January at the Club. Apart from the various reports and items that will be discussed, the new Committee will have to be elected. It is the right and responsibility of every member to nominate persons whom they feel will be able to contribute to the Club through serving on the Committee. Please collect Nomination Forms from the office and complete these so that they can be placed on the Notice Board prior to the meeting.
Membership Fees were due from the 1st November for the 2016/7 membership year. Please make sure that you are paid up or have made arrangements for your payment with the Club Management before the Season as all unpaid members will be blocked on the Membership System and will not be able to play in competitions and will have to pay the full fees for any social games. Please give us your support in this matter to avoid any embarrassing situations.
Please help us to make this process as easy as possible by making your payment in time. Your Club depends on each one of you!!
BENCHES ON THE COURSE
Our sincere thanks go to those who have responded to the call for the financing of benches. A number of benches have been replaced and placed in strategic positions on the course. We have some very special members in this Club who are ever willing to step up and make a contribution where there is a need.
Please check out all the planned activities for the Club in December/January and get book your tee-off times well in advance.
Enjoy the read.
After not participating in the Kouga League for a few years our Club has come back with real passion. Louis Boag undertook to do all the organising to get the team together and ensure that we have a representative team for each of the six outings to the various Clubs in the Kouga Region. Apart from our Club the Clubs participating in the League are: Zwartenbosch, Jeffreys Bay, Hankey, Joubertina (Langkloof) and Fynbosch (Eerste River).
Our Team did well throughout the year and ensured that they retained the Trophy by winning the last outing to Hankey and also winning overall. Well done and we look forward to next year!!
Various Golf Days:
Our Club is regularly visited by groups from surrounding areas and also from further afield. These players normally play on a Saturday or Sunday and have for years been a wonderful support to our Club, making up the much needed rounds on the golf course but also making huge contributions to our bar profits and supporting our caterers.
Over the past month our Club had the honour to welcome a number of groups to our course. It was great to have the QUACC’s, ABSA, Tee to Green, ABF, Beavers, LUK Eagles as well as the Eastern Cape & Southern Cape Nomads at our Club. The Nomads played their annual competition between the two regions over two days – One day on the Links and the second day at St Francis Bay. The Eastern Cape came out the winners and received the trophy during Prize-giving. CEO of St Francis Links, Jeff Clause, acted as Fines-Master and extracted a good sum of money from all present in support of the NOMADS charities.
Our St Francis Bay GC version of our annual Ryder Cup competition took place on the 12th November. The teams of the Chair man & Captain battled it out over 18-holes in three different competition formats. Each player received a golf shirt identifying the team which they represented. The supplying of these shirts was made possible by generous donations from sixteen members of the Club. We thank each one of them on behalf of all the players on the day.
The competition was fierce and although the eventual score would indicate a rout for the Chairman’s Team, many of the matches were balanced on a knife-point for most of the time. The Captain’s Team eventually ran out winners by 26 to 14 – This is the third year that the Captain’s Team has won the Trophy.
Thanks again to Ian Strang who produces these stats for us every month. The month showed a 15% increase in rounds and our Year to Date figures are still well up on last year.
Make sure that you are booked for these days.
The Golf Course
Please help us by repairing pitch-marks on the greens as well as filling in divots on the tees and fairways. This should however NOT slow you down!!
During the Super Moon the seas were really extra high and after a prolonged onslaught, we lost our dune-defences when the poles we planted were washed out. We have however replanted them and they are still ensuring the safety of the dune at the back of the 12th green.
The high winds have also taken its toll as areas have been dried out and our bunkers are also taking a hammering. In the meantime we are still having to pump water from the 6th dam into the swale along the 5th fairway so that it can make its way to the 16th/18th dam and be controlled from there.
Could we ask players to please take care in the following places on the course:
- Please do not access the area to the right and behind the 12th green with your carts or golf buggies. Walk around the left side. We have been pretty successful in growing back some coverage. You will notice the success we have already had.
- The same goes for the area between the dune and the green on the right side of the 7th green.
- Please also do not drive golf buggies between bunkers and the green on 3rd, 6th, 8th 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 17th & 18th and between the green and water on the 8th.
- Please try and avoid driving over sprinkler-heads and other irrigation equipment. Replacing these is becoming a costly exercise and something that can be avoided.
Please be an example to our visitors by helping us to keep our course clean and tidy. If you see the odd bottle, can or plastic bag lying around, please pick it up and deposit it in the bin at the next tee.
Have a great month of golf and enjoy the Club.
LADIES SECTION: KIEWIET REPORT NOVEMBER 2016
The month of November was a highlight for Ladies Golf at St. Francis Bay. It is amazing what this small group of ladies can do!! My thanks to each and every one of you for your contribution and support, not only to golf, but also to each other and the Committee. It is dearly appreciated.
BABOON CHALLENGE: 1st NOVEMBER
Lady golfers from St. Francis Bay Golf Club and Jeffreys Bay Golf Club compete twice yearly in the Baboon Trophy Challenge. This Challenge is different than other competitions due to the fact that the loosing team wins the Trophy!
The first Challenge took place in April this year and Jeffreys Bay “won” the Trophy. The second challenge took place on Tuesday 1st November in splendid conditions. Each team consisted of eleven ladies and at the end of the day scores were level. The Baboon will rest in Jeffreys Bay’s trophy cabinet till 2017.
Over the years Jeffreys Bay won the Baboon trophy six times, St. Francis four times and on seven occasions it was shared.
The St. Francis ladies would like to thank the ladies from Jeffreys Bay for the friendly spirit in which these challenges take place and also for the delicious lunch after the latest challenge.
GOOD GOLF, GOOD WEATHER AND GOOD FUN AT LADIES OPEN
Golf is a game played on a large open-air course, in which a small hard ball is struck with a club into a series of small holes in the ground, the object being to use the fewest possible strokes to complete the course.
That is what 128 lady golfers did the weekend of 19th & 20th November in the Pam Golding Properties Ladies Weekend Open on the courses of St. Francis Links and St. Francis Bay (SFBGC). Ladies from as far as Jagersfonteir, East London, Pretoria, George, Mossel Bay, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Paarl and Cape Town joined ladies from Port Elizabeth and the Kouga region to participate in the biggest ladies event in the Eastern Cape.
But they did much more than just playing golf! They also experienced a “Lady in Red” gala dinner with music by Peter Papapanayotou, lovely lunch and prize giving and the possibility to win hole-in- one prizes from Dirk Ellis Volkswagen in Jeffreys Bay (VW Polo) and a R5000 voucher from Annemarie’s Boutique in St. Francis Bay.
There were 18 prizes to be won over these two days. The outstanding golfers who won first prizes on both courses were:
- Francis Links: Amanda Cloete (Simola) & Sunet Venter (Knysna)
- SFBGC: Janine van der Merwe (SFBGC) & Melinda McCay (Uitenhage)
- Francis Links: Jill Simmonds & Melanie Bray (Knysna)
- SFBGC: Gloria Greyvenstein & Gail Botha (Mosselbay
The overall prize winners for the weekend were Jill Simmonds & Melanie Bray
Pam Golding Properties in St. Francis Bay, and especially Richard Arderne, have been involved as the main sponsor for this tournament since inception. The two Clubs and all the Ladies deeply appreciate their involvement in supporting and developing ladies golf.
Thanks also to all the other prize sponsors:
- Aqua Spa & Skin Clinic
- Bard’au & Co
- Carol Horlock – Accommodation prize on Links
- Glo Beauty & Body Boutique
- Hibiscus Health & Beauty Studio
- Prestige Beauty & Body Boutique
- Francis Point Vineyard
Looking after the fluid supplement for the ladies were Village Square Super Spar, Distell, SAB and 19th Hole Wines.
PRESIDENT VERSUS CAPTAIN CHALLENGE
The ladies played their yearly President versus Captain match play competition on Tuesday 29th November in perfect weather conditions. The President’s Team of Heilie Uys was victorious over the Captain’s Team of Carol Hemsley. Thanks ladies for the wonderful spirit of camaraderie and caring amongst us!
