The Kiewiet July 2019

Time fly’s when you are having fun. Two months has flown by since I started and it is wonderful to be involved in such a great club and atmosphere. Mother Nature has unfortunately not played along in terms of dishing out some windy Wednesday over the last 6 weeks but when the weather plays her part it is great to see the fairways busy.

In terms of Club competitions, the highlight was the Club Championships weekend held in June. With 42 players testing their game and looking for the honours of Club Champion and Champions in their respective divisions. With some great golf played over the two days in near perfect conditions, although when it is Club Champs and Medal it always adds a bit more tension to the swing, the steady swings proved their metal and our Champions were crowned with Johan Potas winning the Men’s Club Championship and Janine van der Merwe taking home her 3rd Ladies Club Championship title.

BMW CGI Members Day

After Janine’s great success and wonderful experience and trip to Mexico this year I’m sure we all looking to repeat her great feat and you can start by winning the Club event to send you through to the regional qualifiers at St Francis Links later in the year.

BMW have opened the tournament up to clubs to host a local qualifier and ours is on Saturday 13th July so be sure to enter and stand a chance to win a trip of a life time.

BMW will be here from 09h00 on the Saturday 13 July morning with their cars on display and available for a test drive if any one is interested.

From the Captain…..

How the time flies when one is enjoying oneself…..the shortest day of the year and the halfway mark have come and gone while both the Calamari Classic and the Christmas holiday season are descending upon us with speed….hectic!!!

Lovely rains recently have further enhanced the condition of our course which is playing superbly. We have just hosted the EP Seniors for two days – 29/30 June – and the feedback on the course was very positive indeed. A very successful club championships was held during June and we congratulate Johan Potas on his victory. Our Scratch League team ended 3rd in the first league while our Kouga League team still has two rounds to play where they are currently also lying in 3rd spot.

It’s nice to have Dezzi back behind the bar after her injury and with the jabber having returned to its former decibel levels this will no doubt hasten her full recovery! Welcome back to Anzet who has been on maternity leave for four months We are reviving our bi-monthly attendance draw on Fridays along with the addition of a monthly bonus draw on the first Friday of each month. For the bonus draw we require 40 entries for 6 months at R50 per month, totaling R300, which will provide a monthly winner of R1000 and a jackpot winner at the last of the 6 draws in December of R6000. Jani and her catering team will be offering scrumptious dinners on these draw nights as well so please come along and support your club.

Forthcoming events include our Super Sixes – better-ball match-play knockout over 6 holes – on Sunday 14 July, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all last year, our various internal knockout competitions are underway, we will advise on the dates for our Greenkeeper’s Revenge Day, as well as our Heritage Day when we play the course to its original layout. We have a new monthly Wednesday sponsor in Adviceworx – thanks to Ryan Truelove for his support on every third Wednesday of the month! Our Calamari Classic preparations are progressing well and we look forward to another cracker of a tournament.

Yours in golf,

Ken Nieuwenhuizen.

Dear Ladies,

Although June is the winter and golfers are often impeded by the weather our ladies have continued regardless. Our Tuesday mornings ladies are enthusiastically playing social or competition golf depending on the numbers. Get well soon Helen Gustavo we miss you on Tuesdays.

June was a busy month with our ladies playing in the finals of the EPWG League as well as in our Club Championships. Thanks to all who represented the Club and congratulations to our winners in the Championships.

Please support us in the July Hankey Day as well as a Ladies Open Day we are planning in August. Please keep an eye on the Facebook page and notices.

Stay warm and dry for the next winter months. Remember, putting can always be practiced on the carpets when it is raining.

The league team played Walmer Golf Club for the winner or runner up position on the 10th of June. We played at Wedgewood and were narrowly beaten to be runner’s up for the second year in a row. Wedgewood provided a wonderful lunch and next year’s league format was discussed. Thank you to Nicole Kellett for her positive captaincy this year and to all the ladies who represented us, many thanks for the travelling and great spirit.

Following our good League results the ladies geared up for Club Championships, our premier event of the year. We had 9 silver division players with Heather Kruger and Kathy Smith travelling from Johannesburg and Brenda Ferreira, Dale Ball and Janine van der Merwe travelling from Port Elizabeth. Thank you for your commitment. We had two days of medal for the silver and bronze division and one day of stableford points for the copper division on the Sunday. The weather was wonderfully cooperative, and two great days of golf ensued.

Thanks to Justin Roux and his management team as well as Ladies Captain Dawn Speirs and her Committee for the smooth organisation, Gordon Dennett and his grounds team for outstanding course conditions, Jani and Frank Ellis for keeping up the energy level with tasty food and the bar staff for quenching the players thirst.

Gross competition:
Silver Division winner & Ladies Champion: Janine van der Merwe
Silver Division runner up: Heather Kruger
Bronze Division winner: June Mason
Copper Division winner: Sue Charter
Nett competition:

Please diarise this date for our yearly Kouga Ladies Day at Hankey Golf Club. For the past five years we had the pleasure to gather the ladies from all Kouga Clubs on the fairways and greens of Hankey and to experience the hospitality of Zana and her Team.

Please join us by entering your name on the list in the book as soon as it becomes available.
