The Kiewiet June

Dear Members and friends of St Francis Bay Golf Club,

Winter is starting to show itself but we have experienced some brilliant weather and golf on the whole was a pleasure over the past month or more. Rain has been very scarce and we have so far received about 60% of our regular average rainfall for the first five months of the year. We trust that we will soon receive some much needed rain in the dam catchment areas and also our wish for the Western Cape where they are in dire straights.

In spite of the lack of good rain, our course is looking great and our greens have come on in leaps and bounds and must now rate amongst the top greens in our province. Our thanks to Gordon and his team as well as the Grounds Committee for their efforts to make our golfing experience something special every time.

We are also happy to have our “Mr Moneybags”, Ian Strang, back after his appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon. We wish him a soon return to the golf course. It is also great to see Robert Hemsley back after his forced medical absence. Trust that he will soon be back to a full 18 holes again.

There are also many of our members, Men and Ladies, who are at present struggling with health issues and we wish them a soon return to health and strength so that they can again enjoy our Club.

May of course also saw Anzet Muller changing her surname to Schoeman. Our belated congratulations to Anzet and Ruanne Schoeman on their wedding and wishing them a long and happy life together.

In spite of the good weather our golf rounds are showing a bit of a decline against last year when we really enjoyed a wonderful run with visitors and members playing a large number of rounds. Please support your Club and also advertise the Club with your friends around the country and overseas. In order to improve the rounds the Club has again advertised “Winter Rates” which makes playing here really very affordable. Please make use of these rates and tell your friends about it as well.

The Calamari Classic is just three months away and the Club now requires all bookings to be confirmed with a payment. If payment is not received, the booking will be cancelled and allocated to someone on the waiting list. Please make sure that you pay NOW!!

Please read through the rest of this Newsletter to see what is happening and which events are coming up during June & July. If you have any contribution to make to the Newsletter, please send it to Janine at the Club and we will see how it can be used.

Support your Club and enjoy the golf,

From the Captain

A decade ago Heather & Clive Rabie came forward with the Friday afternoon Sundowner which they also sponsored. Their generous support has given great pleasure to many golfers far and wide. We thank them for their support and wish them well in Hermanus. As one door closed another opened in the form of The Cape St Francis Resort who very kindly agreed to take over the sponsorship. Their first event was on the 2nd of June and was very well supported. We are very grateful to The Resort & may the event grow further in popularity. For future Sundowners the handicaps of winner & runner up will only be cut by 6 and 4 shots respectively for their next Sundowner ( 3 & 2 strokes in reality it being a 9 hole competition).

The rounds for the various knock-out trophies have commenced and we appeal to entrants to play their matches sooner rather than later as we are slightly behind from a timing perspective. Despite a well-earned victory over Walmer CC in our final fixture, our scratch league team failed to avoid relegation and as such will play in the 2nd Division next year. I would like to thank Craig Haverley for the enthusiastic manner in which he captained and managed the side.

The Calamari Classic is now only three months away and plans are pretty much on track. There are a few tees / greens that require sponsors and if anyone assists with obtaining sponsors it would be of great help. Keith Anderson is handling the brochure and as such if members are able to assist with locating advertisers it too would be much appreciated.

I am sure all will agree that the course is in great condition, especially the greens. Our thanks to the green keeping team for their efforts in this regard. With the quieter Winter months upon us it would be wonderful if we could make every effort to increase rounds, Your club needs your support!

Happy times on and off the course.”

Richard Vauqulin – Club Captain

Club Championships

The Club Championships, sponsored by St Francis SuperSpar, took place over two days (22nd & 23rd April) and was well supported although it would be wonderful to see a larger field of players competing to be the Club Champion or winner in their Division.

Our congratulations on the arrangements for the two days and also the good golf played by the golfers in the three Divisions. Also our thanks to Richard Moolman & SuperSpar.

After a brilliant round of golf on the first day Darryl Hendricks had some moments of truth on the second day but he still won the best net prize in the B-Div. Our Captain, Richard Vauqulin and Etienne Coenraad, made valiant efforts to haul in Louis Boag. It was also wonderful to have Don Speirs and John Poole win the B and C Divisions respectively. Well done.

Congratulations to our Club Champion, Louis Boag, who was again Mr. Consistency over the two days, as well as our winners and runners-up in all the Divisions. Our congratulations also to Janine van der Merwe on retaining the title of Ladies Champion that she won last year.

Thanks to everyone that participated over the two days – Men and Ladies.

On Saturday 29th April a very successful MAKRO/Rotary Golf Day was held at our Club. Thanks to all the players who pitched up and played and made this day a great success. Thanks to Rotary for allowing us to have this day at our Club. From the photos it is clear that everone enjoyed themselves and the golf.

WINTER SPECIALS In order to increase our rounds and to make it possible for more people to play golf during the shorter days of winter, the Club has again decided to do some winter specials.

Also remember the Friday-night dinners and the Lucky Draws which take place every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month. The catch is that you have to be present at the draw in order to win. Our next draw is on Friday 9th June and the Jackpot is standing at R600 so make sure you are there.

There is also a lovely dinner with Lamb-shanks and all the goodies that go with it for only R135.

Please book at the Club – 042 294-0467.

There is also a Fathers’ Day Lunch on Sunday 18th June so make sure that your place is booked well in advance.

Kouga League

Our Team continues to play well enough to stay in the First Place. It is a bit tight at the top with Fynbos only 18 points in arrears but we have only two games to go and one of them is at home so hopefully our Kouga Team can pull it through again this year. Well done to our very committed team. Wishing you well for the rest of the year. We are rooting for you.

Scratch League

The Scratch League has been concluded and in spite of winning their last game against Walmer CC, our Team has been relegated and will play in the 2nd Division in the 2018 season.

As mentioned by our Captain our thanks goes to Craig Haverley who has managed the team and also to the players who played and represented our Club.

Friday Sundowner Competition

For the past ten years Heather Rabie of Heather Rabie Properties has been the sponsor of this regular competition which has over the years drawn its own group of players and had some wonderful highlights in the form of Holes In One and great scoring in general. With Heather & Clive moving to Hermanus this season has come to an end and we were very fortunate to have the Cape St Francis Resort agreeing to step in and take up the sponsorship in future.

We thank Heather for her wonderful support of the Sundowner as well as many other events over the years and wish them well in their move.

We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial association with the Cape St Francis Resort.

SANLAM Cancer Challenge

Saturday 17th June will see us again hosting this annual Golf Day. Over the years our Club has been a great supporter of the SANLAM Cancer Challenge and we have had a number of our members who have progressed to the Regional and even the National Finals.

I am sure that there is not one of us who have not in some way been touched by the scourge of cancer.

Please support this worthy cause and help SANLAM support CANSA to fight this scourge and support people affected by it.

Phone the Club and book a spot or a 4-Ball and get your friends to come and enjoy a day of golf in support of a great cause.

Make sure you get to the Club for a meal and a drink and be there when your numbers comes up!!

Enjoy your golf,

The winter period has always been the most challenging period for any golfer.  The sun rises later and the fairways are wet and one has to go into a different body-timing mode. In spite of that many events took place from April till June.

The St. Francis Bay Golf Club’s Mixed Open golf day, arranged by the Ladies, is a very popular Easter event and was played on Monday 17th April.  This event was much enjoyed by all the players in beautiful cool windless weather. In the field were players from Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, the St. Francis Links and supporting Kouga golf courses.

Heather Rabie from Heather Rabie Properties has sponsored this event for seven years and SFBGC is extremely grateful for her very generous support. The success of this event is dependent on Heather’s commitment and the support from husband Clive.

The 2017 Ladies Club Championships took place on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April in beautiful golf weather that ensured excellent scoring conditions.

The field consisted mostly of local golfers, but we also had the pleasure of having players from Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.

Thanks to Janine van der Merwe and her management team as well as the two Captains, Richard Vauqulin and Dawn Speirs for the smooth organisation, Gordon Dennett and his grounds team for outstanding course conditions, Jani and Frank Ellis for keeping up the energy level with tasty food and the bar staff for quenching the players thirst.

All the players would like to thank Village Square Superspar St. Francis Bay for their generous sponsorship towards the Championship.

Ronelle du Toit, Captain JBGC holds
The Baboon Trophy while Dawn Speirs,
Captain of SFBGC stays “hands off!”

The great challenge between the ladies of St. Francis Bay Golf Club (SFBGC) and Jeffreys Bay Golf Club (JBGC) for the Baboon Trophy took place on 23rd May at SFBGC. This was the first of two matches this year. What makes this challenge different is that the losing team wins the trophy. Since 2003, JBGC won the trophy eight times and SFBGC only four times.

This first challenge of 2017 was played in excellent weather conditions with smiles and friendly rivalry. Each team consists of twelve players and at the end of the day SFBGC beat JBGC. The Baboon will stay in JBGC’s trophy cupboard till October when the next challenge will take place in Jeffreys Bay.

The St. Francis ladies would like to thank the ladies from Jeffreys Bay for the friendly spirit in which these challenges always take place.

Advanced notices!!!

Please be part of this great day by not only playing golf and win great prizes (in handicap divisions) but also to contribute to the fundraising effort for Cancer Research.

The number of ladies playing on a Tuesday morning has dwindled to such an extent that the Committee decided to reinstate the Special Tuesday ladies golf days as we did in 2016, and will take place every 3rd Tuesday of each month (June till September). These days were well attended in the past as ladies from other Kouga clubs joined us and Mayra Dold and Lavinia Gluckman brought their friends from Port Elizabeth to join us.

Ladies who want to play social golf on the other Tuesday mornings are still welcome to do so.

The Organising Committee is already at work on the details of the Open Weekend and an invitation poster and entry form will be forwarded before the end of June.

Please diarise this date and be part of two days of golf and fun at SFBGC & St. Francis Links.
