Dear Members and friends of St Francis Bay Golf Club,
This will be the second to last Newsletter for this year. We are already seeing some of our swallows appearing in the Village and soon we will have visitors from all over the world descending on St Francis Bay & Cape St Francis.
We have also come to the end of our Financial Year (end of October) and Membership Renewal Invoices have been sent out to all our existing members. It would be great to have you all renew your membership and join us for another great year of golf and camaraderie. Please take note of the deadlines for payment, especially the “All-in” members who need to pay these fees by 15th November. Also note that membership will be temporarily suspended if the Membership Fees are not paid by 13th December or if arrangements have not been made for payment. Please ensure that you get this out of the way to avoid any unpleasant surprises. I am sure that you will all agree that our Club and Membership is still excellent Value for Money.
Enjoy and play the game!!
PS Make sure that you get to know the new Golf Rules that will come into operation from the 1st January 2019 – See the Notice Board.
From the Chairman
Greetings fellow members,
We are now entering the final quarter of 2018 and the period after the Calamari Classic which I am delighted to report was an outstanding success. All records were broken and to add to the success we had good weather for the duration of the event which in my experience is rare for this time of the year.
The +/- 270 participants were unanimous in their praise of the event as a whole and the outstanding condition of our golf course which throughout the year has drawn positive comments from all who play golf.
Thanks must again go to Janine, Gordon and their exceptional staff and the dedicated and hardworking “Calamari Committee” under the leadership of Richard Vauqulin as well as all the member volunteers.
We should also never forget our sponsors who make this event possible and for the next year will appear on our “Calamari Board” at the entrance to the club. They support us so please support them if you can!
As chairman it never ceases to amaze me how our committee, staff and members pull together so effectively not only during Calamari but in general to make our club the success it is.
It is truly an exceptional club!
The next few months leading up to year-end should see a steady increase in traffic through the club as “swallows” return from the cold north and local holiday makers head to the coast and we look forward to a “bumper season”.
Please arrange your golf early and join us at the club that delivers the friendliest atmosphere and a “great golf course”.
I would like to close my message by conveying thanks to my fellow committee members who have given me exceptional support this year and through this “teamwork” we have so far achieved great results.
Yours in Golf
From the Captain
With the numerous events of late Spring has suddenly sprung into Summer. How this year has flown, who would have thought that we would soon be welcoming the swallows to our shores?
CALAMARI CLASSIC 2018
The 21st Classic was successful with even the weather collaborating for a change. A tremendous amount of hard work was put in by all our staff, committee & the several volunteers. As a club we must be very grateful for their tireless contributions which are often unheralded. The course was in immaculate condition (“best ever” according to some participants) and as such our green-keeping team staff are to be congratulated. A key ingredient of the event is sponsorship. Despite the downturn in our economy the generosity of our sponsors was incredible and we are urged to support them wherever possible. Congratulations to the overall winner, Jenny Ririe who plays out of Walmer GC – The first time a lady is the Overall Winner. Prior to the event our financial man downstairs doubted that we would beat last year’s record. That we did so by some R31000 has left him red faced and owing me a beer for which I live in hope!
We held our final fixture at home on 29 September and managed to hold off our closest pursuers. In so doing the team has won the league for an unprecedented 4th successive year. A huge well done to the team for this fantastic achievement. Louis Boag captained the conscientiously and for this we are very grateful. For the record the runners up were Zwartenbosch GC, some 74 points adrift.
PEZULA CAPTAINS INVITATIONAL
Congratulations to our ladies team (Dawn Speirs, Heilie Uys, Janine van der Merwe & Nicole Kellett) for winning the ladies section of the Pezula Captains Invitational. I am at a loss to explain the less than stellar performance of our mens team (Messrs Lane, Nieuwenhuizen, Spiers & Boschoff). Possible reasons put forward were jet-lag and subjection to Knysna nectar. Judging from the composition of the team one could be forgiven for assuming the latter.
Only the ladies had a photo available – See Ladies Section
- RYDER CUP, 3 November
This event is always well supported. As such you are urged to put your names down sooner rather than later in order to avoid disappointment. Following several meetings with the President I have been assured that there will be no skulduggery this year (you may recall that the drinks of the Captain’s team were regrettably spiked by the opposition last year). Such disgraceful behaviour is clearly not in the “right spirits”.
- CONTINENTAL CARS / BMW DAY, 17 November
Another popular event for which entries ought to be filed early in order to avoid missing out.
- CAPTAINS DAY, 8 December
This will again be subsidised by the Captains Fund and include a meal to which spouses are most welcome – at a small additional cost. The guest speaker this year will be a member of the R & A whose after dinner speeches have a handicap index of plus 5.
To happy times on and off the course.
Richard Vauqulin – Club Captain

CALAMARI CLASSIC 2018
As the Chairman and Captain already mentioned, this year’s Calamari Classics broke all records and we had great weather on top of that. The course was in magnificent condition and the faster greens and new handicapping system made for lower overall scores and a lady, Jenny Ririe, winning the Overall Competition – A first for Calamari. Mark Thompson again won the Old Man Trophy for the best “Over 60’s” player.
A great time was had by all and it was good to see some old friends back and some new friends made during the weekend. We look forward to having you all back here again next year.
Our sincere thanks also to all the sponsors without whom this event just would not be possible or be such a success.

LADIES SECTION: KIEWIET REPORT OCTOBER 2018
FROM THE CAPTAIN
It is quite astounding that the year is drawing to a close.
Our league team finished second to Humewood this year and was awarded the trophy at a lovely lunch at Wedgewood. Thank you to our fine captain Nicole Kellett for our new team outfit and encouraging us throughout the year. Thank you to the players for travelling, braving difficult weather and courses.
Tuesday ladies golf has been wonderfully attended this year due to the enthusiasm of Joan Louise Manthe and the communication from June Mason. Thank you ladies for being such stalwart golfers. You are stars.
The beginner ladies have been contacted and many will be attending clinics at the Links while our professional Wallie Coetzee is playing the circuit. We would love to include them in our ladies Tuesday group as soon as they are ready. This is a wonderful boost for our Ladies golf, thank you to the committee for working hard to keep this group motivated and involved.
The friendship and camaraderie that golf brings is irreplaceable and I wish all our lady golfers a wonderful month ahead.
Upcoming events where ladies are more than welcome is the Ryder Cup and the Captains Day, check the notice board should you wish to participate. Please join us at the Ladies Open in November and the Kettlewell Trophy, our last trophy event in December, before we enjoy the festive season with families.
CALAMARI CLASSIC 21-23 SEPTEMBER 2018
The Calamari started with a beautiful cold day, but the wind freshened as the day went on. All the players seemed to have enjoyed the day and after Prize-giving they enjoyed the meal as well as the great music.
History was made at this 21st Tournament! For the first time the Calamari Classic was won by a Lady. Jenny Ririe walked away with the Overall prize.
A great time was had by all and we again thank all our sponsors and the players who came to enjoy the Calamari Classic.
Jane Schulz and her Team from Plettenberg Bay Golf Club won the Best Dress Four Ball prize for the second year in a row.
The overall lady winners were:

PEZULA GOLF CLUB AND CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE CAPTAINS DAY EVENT – 7 OCTOBER
Congratulations to our Ladies Captain, Dawn Speirs and her Team consisting of Janine van der Merwe, Nicole Kellett and Heilie Uys for winning the second Pezula Golf Club Ladies Captain’s Day Tournament on Sunday 7th October. Captains’ Teams from the Southern Cape, SFBGC and St Francis Links enjoyed beautiful weather and friendship on this spectacular course.
The SFBGC’s Team followed in the footprints of the 2017 Team from St Francis Links who won the first Ladies Captain’s Tournament.
LADIES ROCK HANKEY GOLF CLUB!
The yearly ladies golf day at Hankey Golf Club, organised by St Francis Bay Golf Club, brought a special vibe to the town on Tuesday 9th October. Ladies coming from St. Francis Bay and St. Francis Links courses, Jeffreys Bay, Zwartenbosch, Hankey and Uitenhage played in very hot conditions but Zana Gouws and staff from Hankey provided ice cold towels and water during the round to keep the golfers cool.
Zana Gouw, Toska Joubert and Madele Ferreira spoiled the ladies with refreshments before tee-off time as well as a special lunch afterwards. Each lady received a box filled with fresh fruit and vegetables. Our thanks also go to the farmers in the area for their generosity.
The ladies were on top of their game with excellent scores:
- First: Ronelle du Toit, Joan-Louise Manthe, June Mason and Bev Gillson – 85 points
- Second: Pam Beaumont, Sue Eickhaus, Joan Pratt and Irene Bradley – 84 points
- Third: Meinda McCay, Jenny Schulze, Reinette Roos and Tammy Webster – 79 points
- Fourth: Sandra Marais, Les Lucas, Helen Gustavo and Lu Ellis – 75 points
- Nearest to the pins were Sue Eickhaus and Heilie Uys
The ladies thank Zana, Toska and the staff for their hospitality and the Management of Hankey Golf Club for the excellent condition of the course. This course is a real gem in the Eastern Cape.
EP SENIOR WOMENS GOLF EVENT
It was SFBGC’s privilege to host the October Senior’s Event. There was a different vibe in the club house with 42 ladies enjoying excellent weather and friendship.
Shelley Owen made sure that the SFBGC ladies was represented at prize giving as she won second prize as well as a two club. She was also responsible for the beautiful flower arrangement that draw much attention – thank you Shelley

EPWG LEAGUE – ST FRANCIS BAY FINISHES SECOND OVERALL!
Under the leadership of our League Captain, Nicole Kellett, the ladies of SFBGC showed incredible determination during the four rounds of the 2018 League Season (9 teams in total).
After the first round they were in the 6th position, then tumbled to 8th, and after the third round jumped up to third! With the final round being played at Wedgewood golf Estate on Monday 22 October, they pulled out all stops and ended second, behind Humewood GC who was the overall winners.
Well done all the ladies who were part of this outstanding Team!
