The KIEWIET September 2018

Dear Members and friends of St Francis Bay Golf Club,

The time has come for our annual Calamari Classic Tournament which will take place on Friday, Saturday & Sunday 21st to 23rd September. This is the 21st playing of this tournament and it has really just gone from strength to strength thanks to the continued support of our sponsors and also our regular and new players who have joined us for our biggest Fund-raising Event of every year.

The weather looks very promising and we again have a full field of players teeing off from just after 06h00 every morning with the afternoon field teeing off until well after 13h00. We wish all our players an enjoyable time here in St Francis Bay and we again want to express our appreciation for your support.

An event like this is not possible without our sponsors. We want to say a very special “Thank You” to each and every one of you for your wonderful and continued support every year. You make this event possible.

Enjoy and play the game!!

Honesty, Integrity, Courtesy: Three words that have come to represent the spirit in which the game of golf is played.
Repair Divots & Pitch marks;
Watch your language on the Course and in the Club – You are in a public place!!
Keep up with the Pace of play;
Don’t play with a ball you can’t afford to lose – Searching for balls take up time;
Make the game enjoyable for your playing partners – Don’t give unwanted advice;
Be ready to play when it is your turn;
Watch where you park your trolley or buggy – Check EXIT direction.

From the Chairman

Dear Members & Friends,

Hopefully all is well, and now that the worse of the winter is behind us you can look forward to warmer weather and good golf.

The clock is counting down to the 21st Calamari Classic which has been seen our organizing committee and staff preparing frantically for this major sporting event which promises as usual to be a highlight for both our club and St Francis Bay.

 Below is my message to those taking part in the event that will appear in the in the brochure handed out to the player’s. It also includes adverts and a list of our fantastic sponsors.

A huge thanks go out to them, our staff and organizing committee for making this event successful year after year. We are looking forward to a “bumper one” that hopefully breaks all records and to those of our members taking part – We hope you play good golf but most of all -have “tons of fun”!

Calamari Classic – Chairman’s Message

A warm welcome to all participants, friends and families joining us at this year’s Calamari Classic.

This year will be the 21st anniversary of this annual – event described by Graeme van der Nest of the Pro Shop as the “Jewel in the Crown” of St Francis Bay Golf Club!

Our staff and organizing committee will as usual pull out all stops to bring you the best event possible with fantastic prizes and fun events over the next three days.

 Hopefully “the weather gods” will be kind to us but whatever the weather we are sure that this year’s event will be one of the highlights of your year.

Special thanks must go to our sponsors who appear on a list in this brochure. Their support makes this event possible and we would ask you to support them where possible in the future.

 Huge thanks to all the staff and the committee at our club- many of whom are in the background.

They do an amazing job both before and during this event to make this an enjoyable experience for all.

Enjoy the golf but most of all have fun.

Yours in Golf

From the Captain

Spring has arrived accompanied by much welcome rains which have rendered the course in as good a condition as ever. The changing of the season has also brought with it a new handicap system which by all accounts we are adjusting to without too many teething problems.

Being chosen to host the recently held inaugural Champion of Champions Tournament can be considered an honour for our club. I requested Greg De Doncker of the EPGU / GolfRSA to provide feedback following the event. Extracts from his response herewith:

  • “I knew the participants were going to be in for a special treat on a course that was presented to us in superb condition”
  • “Other clubs in the province certainly can learn from yours”
  • –was amongst the best if not the best conditioned course the participants had played on”
  • From those who did not fare too well: “We are not used to playing under such good conditions. I believe St Francis Bay has won many admirers for what was presented to the participants”

It was only fitting that Heather Kruger provided the “cherry on the top” so to speak by winning the Ladies A Section. Considering the competition she faced from all the other Eastern Cape Club Champions it was a fantastic effort indeed, very well done Heather.

A few weeks ago we participated in our penultimate fixture at Hankey & finished joint first with Zwartenbosch on 278 points. It is rare for the home side not to win which makes the result all the more commendable. Zwartenbosch were & are as such still our closest challengers, some 33 points behind. The final fixture, at home, is scheduled for the 29th of September & if we pull it off it will be for the 4th consecutive year. Good luck team, make us proud!

From a National perspective there has been some criticism within certain clubs regarding the new stroke index guidelines. The latter is clearly a very subjective issue & our committee decided to heed the guidelines issued by GolfRSA, under the auspices of the USGA, which are based on extensive, in depth research. Conforming with National and International guidelines is surely a step in the right direction. We would be very short sighted not to look at the interests of all our members, the majority of whom do not play off single figures besides those wanting to take up the game. Before formulating an opinion it would be wise to take a macro view, consider the bigger picture & not merely how it affects one’s own game. Being unchartered territory it is a work in progress and as such not cast in stone. If after a few months you feel strongly about something, please convey your thoughts to the committee and we would of course look into it. NB: Written communication is infinitely preferable to post round opinion at the 19th, particularly when Pinotage propelled!

The 21st anniversary of the Calamari Classic is upon us. Being our biggest fund raiser I would to think that we have done our homework. Our several sponsors have again been very incredibly supportive. Weather gods,,, please bear us in mind!

To happy days on and off the course,

Richard Vauqulin – Club Captain

Every year the Golf Club Staff play against each other and this year the winner was Petrus who showed great promise as a golfer. Thanks for the prizes and eats and drinks supplied. A great day was enjoyed by all and the Chairman thanked the Course staff for their dedication to our Golf Club in presenting a great golf course for our visitors to play on.

EP Champion of Champions

Heather receiving her prize from Greg De Doncker.

The GolfRSA Club Champion of Champions event puts the country’s club champions, across all divisions, against each other to determine the ultimate club champion golfer of the year. The winners are crowned Champion of Champions.

We are so proud of Heather Krüger, our Ladies Champion, winning the Handicap division 0-9 at the Champion of Champions event on the 19th August at our Club.

“Your commitment to our Club and especially the Ladies Section is truly appreciated”.

Best of luck in the 2018 Champion of Champions National Final that will be held at Glendower Golf Club on 11th – 13th November 2018.

St Francis Classic

Sunday 9th September saw the playing of this annual EPGU Order of Merit event. The weather was extreme and play had to be interrupted a few times to get the greens to drain but in the end Dillon Germshuys who just loves to win at St Francis Bay, prevailed and won the day. Second was Naldo Claasen and best nett was won by Ralf Manuel from J-Bay. Our thanks to all the participants who showed great “stickability” through the day.

We have a variety of wonderful new stock in the Proshop with a number of “SPECIALS” during the Calamari Classic. Come and check this out. You will be surprised at the prices that we can offer you here at St Francis Bay GC.

Look forward to seeing you and thanking you for your support.

Enjoy your golf,

We thank the three sponsors of our DAILY PRIZES for their generosity and support.

Spring is here!

We are in the last quarter of the year and time to enter the last Eclectic competion. This competition gives the ladies an opportunity to challenge themselves to better their scores on each hole played.

There is still time till end December to record your birdies played.

We are getting closer to our yearly Calamari tournament. As in the past, the ladies will play an important role in supplying assistance with registration, selling of raffle tickets and assisting during dinner every night. We thank you for your willingness to assist and for Pam Beaumont who organised the duty roster.

Our biggest thanks go to Janine and her Team as well as the Calamari Committee who put in many hours and months or preparation in order to ensure another very successful tournament.

Please diarise this date (will be confirmed later) for our yearly Kouga Ladies Day at Hankey Golf Club. For the past four years we had the pleasure to gather the ladies from all Kouga Clubs on the fairways and greens of Hankey and to experience the hospitality of Zana and her Team.

Please join us by entering your name on the list in the book as soon as it becomes available.

Excitement is mounting for the 2018 Pam Golding Properties Ladies Open Weekend. Entry forms were sent out in September and we are striving for a full field again.

These players will be divided into two groups to play the St. Francis Bay course and the Links.

On Saturday at 11:30 players will tee off at the Bay and the Links while these groups will swap around on Sunday teeing off at 07:30. They will enjoy a wonderful dinner and entertainment at the Links on Saturday and on Sunday they will enjoy lunch and prize giving at our club. We thank Richard Arderne of Pam Golding Properties for continuing his sponsorship of this tournament as well as several other sponsors who contribute to ensure the success of this great event.
