The Kiewiet September

Dear Members and friends of St Francis Bay Golf Club,

This edition of the Kiewiet is a special one that we send out just before the Calamari Classic and as this will be the 20th Calamari Classic, we know that all those that participate will be in for a very special time.

The field for the Calamari Classic is full and the Club has a waiting list of people who would still like to play and people still phoning to hear if there isn’t perhaps some opening somewhere. The Committee has worked hard to ensure that we have a great event with many of our previous sponsors and even some new ones who have linked themselves to this outstanding golfing event.

I am sure that Gavin Gerardy and Anita and Eddy Lennox couldn’t in their wildest dreams have believed that this “idea” they had would turn into such a huge success for our Club. Over the years we have had many players who have come back year after year to enjoy the camaraderie and the great competition.

Our past winners and defending champions will hopefully again join us to ensure that this will be a memorable three days at the St Francis Bay Golf Club. We also welcome first-time players and wish them many happy returns.

The weather will as always play a part in this event and we are hoping that we will have three wonderful days in which to play golf and enjoy being with friends and golfing partners.

Our thanks to everyone who are going to make a contribution to the success of this great event.

Support your Club and enjoy the golf,

Ed

From the Captain

Spring is sprung, the grass is riz,,,,,. How nice it is to seeing the course looking so good. Competitors in the recently held St Francis Classic (EP Order of Merit Event) were full of praise for the greens in particular. Our thanks to Gordon & his dedicated team. With the Calamari Classic upon us, I have no doubt that the competitors from far & wide will also be suitably impressed which has to bode well for rounds in the months ahead.

On Sunday 10th September we had a very successful par 3 competition. This game is designed to accommodate players of all ages and proficiencies while this shortened format of the game is something we will need to look into further as it negates, to a large extent, the two prime obstacles the game is currently facing – time & money.

The winners in 4 Division go through to the finals at Pinnacle Point. We trust that everyone that participated enjoyed this unique event and congratulate the winners:

Handicap 0-9:                    Richard Kellett
Handicap 10-18:                Rowan Nicholls
Handicap 19-30                 Derek De Villiers
Handicap 30+                    Viv Williams

Our Kouga League team has one round left to play, at home (last Saturday of this month)! Trailing by two points behind log leaders Hankey, we are in a very good position to retain our crown. Good luck guys, make us proud.

It is pleasing to advise that after an absence of several years, BMW (Continental Cars) have agreed to sponsor a day (October 7, mark your diaries). Winners will then go through to Regional Finals & thereafter to even bigger & better things.

Golfing memberships countrywide are on the decline by an average of 10% year on year. It stands to reason that with a stronger than average retirement demographic, we are perhaps more vulnerable than other clubs. I have an idea which may well bring in more members, particularly the youth but if any of you have thoughts we would be most grateful if you could come forward. The majority of us have derived such pleasure from the game over the years and as in life, hopefully you will agree, it is not a bad idea to put back. We have an obligation to this great game.

On that note, get your spring swings out & let us make it a September to remember. Happy days on and off the course.

Richard Vauqulin – Club Captain

GOLF ROUNDS FOR THE YEAR TO DATE

We are still experiencing lower rounds than last year but as far as Rand-value the percentages are starting to get closer to 0%. Now that the weather is getting a bit warmer, we are hoping for some more feet on the course to increase our income. We ask all our members to market our Club and to tell all your friends to come and enjoy our friendly Club and best bar prices.

CLUB NEWS

KOUGA LEAGUE

Hankey has been playing great golf all year round and they have now squeezed our team into second place by two points. We wish our Kouga League Team everything of the best for the game. Thanks again to Louis Boag who is the convenor of the team and makes all the arrangements.
