2020 has started and already we have put the first month behind us. After another successful season where the fairways were full and the club house busy, we prepare for a new year and new successes. The end of January and start of February has brought some much-needed rains to the area and the lovely colour of green has started to return to the course and village. Credit must go to Gordan Dennett and his team who have kept the course and greens in such amazing condition over our peak season. With the golf course having just under 6000 feet across over December and January and with the trying weather conditions we are fortunate to have one of the best maintained courses in the Eastern Cape.
At the January AGM the issue of people coming onto the course and into neighbouring properties to collect balls was raised. As we discussed we have taken the relevant steps with the SAPS and they are aware of the problem and that these people are trespassing on our property and have on occasions threatened our staff. We work closely with our security providers to ensure we can curb this as much as possible with the security company having access to the course to try and catch them as well as to do patrols in the evenings to ensure they are not on the course. We ask that the members assist us by not purchasing golf balls from these individuals outside of the club entrance or in the village. We allow our course staff members time to collect balls and we buy them from them which gives them extra income and the more we can prevent people from trespassing and collecting balls the more balls our staff can collect and get paid for.
The committee has decided to implement a maximum Course Handicap for all official club competitions from the start of February. The limit will be 30 for Men and 36 for Ladies.
St Francis Bay GC has joined the Target 36 Program for 2020 and will be the official course for the games in Eastern Cape for this year. The first event is on Sunday the 23rd February in the afternoon. If you are interested in getting your child or grandchild involved have a look at the website for more information. www.target36.co.za
The Pam Golding Annual 4th and 5th January 2020
Don’t forget to book for this great event between St Francis Bay GC and St Francis Links. Day 1 will be at St Francis Links on Saturday morning and Day 2 at St Francis Bay GC with lunch and prize giving after golf on Sunday, Entry Fee is R500 per player excluding carts.
See you on the fairways!
From the Captain – February 2020
The new decade seems to have started fairly well. Rounds have been good in January and February so far, the club is nice and busy and the good vibe that envelopes the clubhouse is a joy to be part of.
Our Scratch League team has played their first round which was contested on the Zwartenbosch course, losing to Shark River but beating PEGC, which is a reasonably good start to their campaign. We kick off the Kouga League on the 15 February at Joubertina and I am delighted to advise that for the first time we will have one of our ladies playing in our team. Nicole Kellet has been added to our squad of players and will play in our first match. Nice to have you on board Nicole – you will brighten up our team significantly!! Nice to have had Wallie Coetzee with us last weekend – he shot a gross 66 but because he is a +6 handicap he ended up with a net 72 and 35 stableford points!!! That’s pretty tough – so no more complaints about handicaps please!!!
Some very welcome rain has fallen recently and it is always heartening to see how quickly our course greens up thereafter. The course is in excellent condition and I record here our ongoing appreciation to our Greenkeepers and staff – the many complements received from visitors certainly makes us proud to be members of this lovely club.
We will soon assemble our Calamari Sub-Committee to commence the work for this very popular event towards the end of September and we look forward to hosting yet another great few days of golf and fellowship.
Our bonus draw has kicked off with the first one at the end of January having been won by our local version of Paul Simon/Art Garfunkel viz. Roger Gilson. Our caterers are offering a delicious meal after the draw so all participants and members are encouraged to come along and enjoy the bonus draw evening at the club which will be the last Friday of each month though to the end of June.
Please spare a thought for some of our members who are dealing with some challenging illnesses at the moment. We wish Ian Price, Ken Wiggins and Rowan Nicholls all of the very best and our thoughts are also constantly with the Boag and Vauqulin families after their recent bereavements.
Swing easy into the breezy and enjoy your golf and time at the club.
MESSAGE FROM THE LADIES CAPTAIN
It is with great pleasure that I pen an introduction to our first Kiewiet Newsletter of 2020, my first as Lady Captain.
The Kiewiet has been in circulation for many years and our thanks go to Heilie Uys who has done and continues to do an outstanding job in gathering and collating information for this newsletter.
We had a quiet December. Our last event of the year was the Kettlewell trophy held on 16 December followed by a Christmas lunch. Our new caterers Anro and Suzette put on a fine meal. It was enjoyed by all.
The Ladies AGM was held in January. This was well attended and Jean Fynn, our outgoing President ran it without a hiccup.
Tuesday golf continues to prosper, and we have now started a beginner’s group for our members who receive lessons two Tuesdays a month, given by our Manager Justin Roux. The first was held on the 4 February and was very successful.
Heilie has covered this in the body of the letter but mention must be made of Bev Gilson’s hole in one. Congratulations Bev. What an outstanding achievement.
Please note our upcoming events. It is wonderful to see that many of our lady golfers participate in these events. May your enthusiasm to support them continue.
We welcome Jean Fynn and Viv Williams back on the golf course. You have been missed. We await in anticipation for Helen Gustavo’s return.
All the best to Heilie Uys who will be having surgery to her knee late February. May you heal quickly.
Finally, a quote from Bobby Jones (17/03/1902 – 08/12/1971). He was an American amateur golfer who was one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport; he was also a lawyer by profession. Jones founded and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club and co-founded the Masters Tournament.
“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots; but you have to play the ball where its lies”
KETTLEWELL TROPHY 2019
This competition was yet again one of our highlights of the year. Twenty five (25) ladies teed off from both tees in fine weather on Monday 16thth December. This event is held yearly to commemorate the the vision John Kettlewell had to introduce many years ago, a trophy event for the ladies section. Caroline Kettlewell represented the family.
All the ladies commented on the excellent condition of the course and thanked the Committee for a job well done.
1st: Gail Alwin
2nd: Clare Milson
3rd: Dale Ball
4th: Heather Kruger
Nearest to pins were Glen Wickham and Alison Kantor
As per tradition, the golf was followed by a splendid Christmas Lunch and we thank Suzette for an outstanding meal.
This is also the day where we invite our founder members to join us. We were privileged and honoured with the presence of Lindi Pagden.
The Ladies Tuesday golf mornings started with great enthusiasm! Our Swallows have started to arrive, and we are glad to have Jane Rigby-Fielder, Val Kedge and Elvira Swanepoel representing Europe on our fairways while our KZN members, Glen and Terry, will be leaving the end of the week. Thanks for your friendship and camaraderie.
We wish our ladies battling with health issues all of the best for their recovery, especially Dawn and Heather Hofmeyr who broke her arm.
It seems as if the ladies play their best golf on a Tuesday especially Bev Gilson who had a hole in one on the 8th hole on 11th February. This was the third time she achieved a hole-in-one!!!!
